On 25 April 2013 it was that time of year again. OTTO Cosmetic opened the gates for Girls’ Day 2013.
Four young ladies participated in Girls’ Day, three Germans and a guest student from Costa Rica. It was really international. The guest student spoke good German. She only had difficulties with technical terms, and if the conversation got too fast. Then the topics were further discussed and explained in English.
After the reception, the participants were instructed on the safety measurements, and then received a factory tour. First, they visited the raw material storage, then the mixing plant, the filling plant and finally the laboratory.
After the break, the girls were taught about safe handling of raw materials, so that they could establish their own laboratory approach. In the laboratory, a strawberry soap was made according to the recipe. The addition of dye and perfume made for a special surprise.
During the analysis, the girls worked with the equipment centrifuge, pH meter, viscometer and density meter, in which the measurements were performed.
After a successful analysis, the finished soap could be filled by them in dispensers and provided with labels. They took the soap in the dispensers as a souvenir for their families.
The girls spent the afternoon in the mixing department, where they had a chance to watch the soap production on an industrial scale. The large dimensions of the tank and the storage tank approach caused great astonishment.
The final talk with the girls and the presentation of certificates of participation showed that the girls gained closer contact with the guest student. All of them exchanged email addresses so as to remain in touch.
It was a pleasant and successful day. We were able to bring the profession of chemical laboratory assistant and of chemist a bit closer to young girls.
Otto Cosmetic is very thankful for the broad participation and will bring the working life closer to young students next year, too.
